McGarvey Jones Financial Planning was established in 2015 as a Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, a FTSE 100 Company, after joining forces with a Manchester based advice firm established in 1990.
Collectively, our advisory team have over 100 years of experience in the field of financial planning.
In order to deliver outstanding service we believe that people are the most important factor in the equation. We are committed to face-to-face financial planning designed to suit clients’ individual long-term requirements. Our business is supported by highly qualified financial planners and our practice support staff.
It is our belief that teamwork is vital and everyone has an equally important role to play. On-going commitment to the development of our people is critical to our client service delivery standards therefore everyone in the company follows a personally tailored development plan.

My vision for McGarvey Jones is to provide a culture that embraces personal development for our clients, staff and other business associates so that everyone concerned realises their potential. We have built a young, highly talented and client centric team who are focused on providing first class service standards now and in the future. I am very proud of them all.
My competitive nature compliments my love of golf and a desire to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. I am a lifelong supporter of Liverpool FC as well as enjoying good food and foreign travel.
Richard McGarvey (DipFS ACSI)
I’ve worked in various roles in the financial services sector for over 20 years, but I can honestly say that I’ve never enjoyed a role more than working for McGarvey Jones. I love nothing more than building long-term relationships with clients and assisting the Practice in providing the highest level of service, along with helping my colleagues and peers in achieving their goals, no two days are the same; every challenge gives me a sense of achievement on a daily basis.
I look after a team that are highly motivated, professional and dedicated, no task is ever too much, we’ve worked hard to create a team environment with a “can do attitude” which I’m proud to say is one of the many assets of the company. In my spare time I enjoy socialising with family and friends and love to travel as much as possible.
Head of Practice Operations
I hold the Personal Financial Society Diploma award and particularly enjoy building clients’ financial planning arrangements and developing these plans according to changing economic conditions and clients’ personal situations as the years pass.
In 1990 I was a co-founder, along with Geoff Hunt, of Harvester Financial Services which became Buckland Harvester in 2005.
With McGarvey Jones Financial Planning I particularly appreciate the emphasis on long-term service and the accumulation of expertise within the team so that the company’s standards are maintained in order to provide a sound basis for our clients’ future needs.
Away from the working environment I enjoy hillwalking and can also be found in the less tranquil surrounds of the Etihad stadium as a long time Manchester City season ticket holder or watching a rock gig at a local venue.
Howard Jones (Dip PFS)
Director and Senior Financial Planner
Prior to joining McGarvey Jones in September 2017 I was previously a financial adviser running my own Practice. I joined McGarvey Jones so that I could ensure that every single client benefits from my aim to develop long-term relationships and lead to the highest levels of service available. To do this I needed to be part of an outstanding team and that is what we’ve got at McGarvey Jones. I believe that all clients have highly personal needs and circumstances which require bespoke solutions to fit their individual situations. My role is to ensure that this happens.
I am a member of the Professional Finance Society and the Institute of Leadership and Management. I also hold the Chartered Insurance Institute Diploma in Financial Planning. My next personal development goal is to achieve Chartered Financial Planner status.
When I am not at work I enjoy mountain walking and participating in adventure races, marathons and “iron-man” style events. I also enjoy cultural trips and holidays in the UK & abroad.
Michael Devine (Dip PFS)
I have worked in financial services for over a decade, having previously been based in The City of London working on the markets. I am a fully qualified member of the CISI and I am currently working towards becoming a chartered member of the CII.
I am passionate about helping design and implement financial plans that secures the futures of families and individuals. McGarvey Jones is the perfect place to allow me to do this. Our incredible team and collegiate approach helps me deliver the best possible outcome for our clients.
My spare time is spent with my family and friends, trying new restaurants and Liverpool FC.
Simon Talbot (Dip PFS)
Since graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University with a First Class (Hons) degree in Financial Services Planning and Management, I have gained valuable experience at both McGarvey Jones and in Hong Kong with St. James’s Place on an internship programme, to further my understanding of the Asian markets and the St. James’s Place approach to Far Eastern investment strategies.
I enjoy working with both clients and colleagues at McGarvey Jones because I enjoy interacting with people and helping people to achieve their lifestyle goals in the correct way. I believe teamwork is very important in our profession and I always aim to make sure my contribution helps us to deliver consistent high levels of service for our clients.
In my spare time I enjoy spending time with friends and family, foreign travel, live music, playing golf and watching Liverpool FC.
Joseph McGarvey (BA Hons)
Trainee Financial Planner
I have worked in the financial services profession for six years in both London and Manchester and hold the Chartered Insurance Institute Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning. I am now planning to progress to Chartered Financial Planner level. Prior to this I graduated with an honours degree from Lancaster University.
I believe communication is important in our industry and I enjoy working at McGarvey Jones because our approachability allows us to build meaningful relationships with our clients and other professionals. Longer term I want to develop my role so that I can spend more time helping clients achieve their goals.
Outside of work, I enjoy live music and try to keep up with the latest fitness trends.
Helen Harrison (BSc Hons, Dip PFS)
Trainee Financial Planner
I joined the company in 2016 after being in the financial services industry after graduating from university. My role is to provide technical support for the business as well as high levels of service for our clients. I also work closely with the Head of Practice Operations to ensure the client support services part of the business runs smoothly. I plan to achieve the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning through the Chartered Insurance Institute by Summer 2018.
I enjoy working at McGarvey Jones because as a team we are always striving to further our knowledge to benefit clients. I enjoy interacting with clients and colleagues and enjoy our team building events.
McGarvey Jones has given me many opportunities to progress and increase my knowledge by participating in management training schemes and supporting me to complete my Diploma qualification.
In my spare time I enjoy baking, spending time with friends and family and travelling.
Rachel Ward (BSc Hons)
After graduating with an honours degree from Manchester Metropolitan University I began my financial services career seven years ago. I am a member of The Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment and I am currently working towards the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning with the Chartered Insurance Institute.
I adopt a pro-active and enthusiastic approach to deliver high levels of service to clients of McGarvey Jones. My role is also to provide technical support to the business for all aspects of the advice process. I like working at McGarvey Jones because the environment we have created allows me to have regular interactions with clients and colleagues in all aspects of the business.
Out of work, I enjoy playing sport, going to music events and travelling.
Claire Campbell (BA Hons, ACISI)
Senior Practice Support Executive
I have worked in financial services for 5 years and I am working towards the Chartered Insurance Institute’s Diploma in Financial Planning. I like working at McGarvey Jones as the team are extremely knowledgeable and supportive. I enjoy the technical aspect of Financial Planning, and providing an excellent service for all of our clients.
Outside of work I spend a lot of time with family and friends and love going up to the Lake District. I am also a Bolton Wanderers supporter, and have a huge passion for music.

The external fund managers are selected and closely monitored by the Investment Committee on behalf of our clients.
The St. James’s Place Investment Committee is, in turn, supported by a number of independent external consultancies that are able to provide extensive research into the investment management universe.
The Investment Management approach involves searching and after thorough due diligence, selecting the most suitable fund managers from across the globe. The fund managers performance and suitability is then constantly monitored and reviewed to ensure a consistent approach.

We are able to offer our clients two main routes to professional investment management via the distinctive St. James’s Place Investment Management Approach or via our Discretionary Fund Managers, Rowan Dartington. Depending on our clients’ investment objectives and attitude to risk we will recommend either one of the options described below or alternatively a blended approach.
